It's actually not. There are always people wondering whether buying a console is worth it or not. Two weeks ago a friend of mine actually asked me whether I thought he should buy a gaming PC or wait for the PS4 at the end of the year.
The discussion will remain relevant for as long as consoles remain relevant.

My view is it cheaper to get a gaming computer that can also do gaming and work. Face it you can't do word and work etc on an Xbox.

In the end they are all in some form or another computers.
Get what ever suits your needs, I would love to have a console to play Halo and Final Fantasy but my pockets are not that deep sadly.
I'd have to disagree with the bang for buck going to the consoles. I would have tied it. Yes maybe the hardware is cheaper, but games in this country are going to rip you a new one, and when you start including steam sales etc there is no comparison.
Console games are not that expensive all the time, only when they're still new on the market. Walk into any BT Games and you're bound to find a bunch of secondhand games for R100 - R200. They also have a lot of good specials a lot of the time.
