Thread: CPU on a budget

    Default CPU on a budget

    Sup all.
Trying to get my pc in shape, I really use it for gaming more than anything else aside from work spreadsheets and by gaming i mean i play little else other than DotA 2.
I'm looking to get my hands on a new CPU and was wondering whether I should go I5 or I3. I might play some other games like maybe the new simcity but mainly DotA. Any thoughts on the matter?

    Thanks all

What is your current cpu/psu/gfx card spec? Budget for new cpu?

i3 & invest whatever is saved (vs buying i5) in the GFX card.

+1 to that DoTA 2 is not a very CPU intensive game at all. I got a friend playing it with Pentium G860 with no problems.

You have to stick to the same socket unless buying a new motherboard

Got some dual core thing going on this old pc.
I was going to pick up a new mobo when i go get the processor, was gonna go gigabyte H77 which is 1155 socket.
Ive also got a gt430 at home but methinks its broken as when i plug it in i only get "Standard vga graphics adaptor" in the device manager.
Could just be the drivers though. Havent tried yet, using my old 9800 in the meantime.
550w cougar PSU should still be fine.
Id obviously have to get some new ram too though as this PC runs ddr2 i think (yes its a little old)

I think you should be able to find a 7770 at a similar price for quite a performance boost. Check around, I would be shocked to see it go for more than R1400

Could pick up a 7770 1Gb if you shop around and a 2Gb for R200 more.
