    Perhaps read the article before making the topic.

    I’ve met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I’m not saying that because I think I’m so brilliant. What I’m saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there’s a reason why,”
    game designer != game developer

    What a dick thing to say.
    You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

    He's not wrong, though. How many game's today can contend with the Ultima series? Or the early D&D games?

    He misses a crucial point, though. Game design doesn't necessarily always suffer because of poor candidates doing the job, it also suffers because publishers tend to interfere too much with the process in their aim to appeal to as wide a market as possible while making as much money as possible. There's a reason why niche indie games are often of much better quality and much better designed than AAA games.

    How many of "today's generation" would be able to play such a game?
    Doesn't the current market demand simplicity?

    If anything I would say that all IP tends to water down as they iterate or similar ones enter the market. No one really wants a challenge or apply thought...

    There was an article somewhere on the web where one tutor tested same of his students using Ultima and they failed. Most of them couldn't just do it in one way or the other. Now if I can find this it would be nice, but for now you would have to take my word for it

    ...Graphics + name = a new game, right

    Indeed. I recently started a playthrough of Thief Gold and it left me wondering how many people would make it into Bafford's Manor, much less finish the game.
