Well, it's kind of to be expected, what with the Steambox, Nextbox and PS4 just looming on the horizon.

One fellow in the comments said that it only reflects on PC sales from brand names like Dell, HP etc and that component sales and even shop-built rigs aren't counted. This seems very likely and that decline would then mostly probably be office type PCs.

I would, however, not be surprised to hear that component sales and custom builds also declined.
The reason for this would be the next gen consoles on the way, as Graal rightly mentioned above. Also, higher end components just seem to stay useful and usable longer than it used to 10 or 15 years ago. The improvements from one hardware generation to the next just doesn't seem to be that big anymore. Or is it just me?

Totally agree with you. I've still got a dual-core PC that runs fine. The HD6870 that I won from Mygaming two years back doesn't seem like it's going to need to be replaced any time soon either. I think the days of upgrading your PC every two years are over. For the moment, at least.

They are putting a lot of the blame for this on Microsoft and Windows 8.

I never buy a branded pc so if that is all they are tracking, me and a whole bunch of others won't be counted... Not that I bought anything in the past 3 months. Waiting for much faster tech to come out before I upgrade again.

No guts, no glory, no brain, same story.

Most likely attributed to Cloud based systems, and the major manufacturers not pushing out desktop units for corporations anymore. Hardly think there is a major decline, there would be impact from the younger generations i.e. generations post high end consoles as they would most likely not co PC over Console. But that's just speculation.

I blame the tablets and tablet phones. Nowadays tablets have almost everything a normal desktop PC has. So why on earth then should people rather buy those huge bulky desktop PCs while they can buy a 10" tablet and do exactly the same things on it. I mean , I'd rather watch youtube while relaxing in a toilet or on my bed than sitting in front of a PC. The casual user wants the most easy and comfortable solution, and that's just what the tablets offer.
