    Default DA members were also part of the struggle during apartheid: DA

    Some South Africans fear that apartheid would return if the Democratic Alliance (DA) led the country, the party's leader Helen Zille said on Saturday.

    "When I travel around South Africa, it truly shocks me to hear that many people think the DA would bring back apartheid if we won an election," said Zille at a Democratic Alliance campaign in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

    "There are a significant number of people who think the DA was responsible for apartheid,...read more here: DA members were also part of the struggle during apartheid: DA

    O'rly?

    If I remember correctly thinking of how the parties were before DA:

    NP -> HNP / NP -> DA / VF

    Not sure if she can just say that DA members helped against it, what do you think?

    Um no, that's not where the NP/NNP went:

    In August 2004 it was announced that Van Schalkwyk would become a member of the ANC, and that the NNP would be disbanded in 2005 or 2006 at the latest. This decision was finalized on 9 April 2005, when the party's federal committee overwhelmingly endorsed its regional committees' recommendation to disband the party as soon as municipal election results were finalised.
    So the NP is right there in the ANC now haha, classic really.

    It is exactly this sort of ignorance (apologies if that sounds insulting) that the DA is trying to overcome. The NNP, which had totally different values and policies to the NP anyway, briefly joined with the DP in 2000 to form the DA before breaking away again in 2001. As mentioned above the NNP later disbanded and many of its leaders joined the ANC.

    The DP has its roots in the Progressive Party/Progressive Federal Party who were the recognised opposition of the NP and very vocal opponents of apartheid.

    No need to apologize, I was just curious as to how the DA came to be out of other parties. Can't say that I do remember the PFP at all...
