Well, they would have been able to show us their game line-up, so it would likely have gone a lot better. One of the biggest complaints about the Xbone reveal was the lack of focus on games.
the sony console also wasnt that impressive imo, they never showed a console so you dont know how big its going to be, you wont know how many ports it will have etc. they showed a kinect like clone PS eye sensor but where vague on its abilities etc. they never announced a hard drive size (just like ms never announced the gpu specs etc).
These kinds of early glimpse releases are pretty common in gaming. I don't really agree. I think they were trying to push their vision of the console as a whole, and they wanted to leave the details of specific games for E3.
Thing is people can complain and all that, but what they're doing with the XBOX One from a business viability standpoint is completely correct. This pure gaming console idea these days doesn't really work out - games just cost too much and the margin is too thin to stand on games alone. Look at what Square is going through despite having some pretty successful games (by normal standards aka multimillion-sellers) like Tomb Raider they lost money on it. Sony is losing or breaking even on PS4. To be successful in the long run they need to position it as more than just a console, and figure out how to extract more value out of it by taking over the living room. This is a very very important strategy for MS at the moment. If you like it or don't like it, it might be what saves the industry.
As far as i know 90% of the 3 Major consoles have always been announced at E3 as e3 is always a major showcase for console reveals, if you look back at past e3 history you will see 1995 saturn, 1997 katana/blackbelt = Dreamcast, 2010 Wii U etc etc
i agree with you that consoles need to offer more in order to make money and stay relevant but consumers should be given a choice and console manufactures, both sony and MS and Even Ninty are not listening to what the consumers want, both the ps4 and xbox 1 will ship with motion sensing cameras that will be needed for some games (every one does not have a hugh living room and what about a paralysed gamer how will the kinect or eye toy benefit him/her etc). the only way i think console costs could be maintained is if a joint development will happen eg. the 3 manufacturers develop a console together, it has the same specs but each one can decide how theirs look and each one can choose their own OS and maintain their exclusive on individual platforms, that would also save developers time an costs from porting their code to individual architectures. There’s a rumor doing the rounds, printed in the February issue of Game Informer, that Sony and Microsoft are toying with the idea of breaking with tradition and making their full next-generation reveals away from E3.
i found an article as to why Sony and MS decided to host individual events this time around
look at the history of E3 and you will see 95% of all major console have been announced there

Yeah you know somehow I had an impression that the Wii was originally shown at Nintendoworld but I guess I'm wrong about that. So it's possible that Sony pressured them into showing their hand early. I still do think that it was probably a good move given that their E3 demo would have been very diverted if they had to show all that TV-multiple-OS-New-Kinect-New-Controller stuff. If both of them feel like they have enough to show in a month's time then it should be a great E3.
So they shouldn't include Kinect because it might not benefit some gamers? That's a bit misguided isn't it? How about - they have enough confidence in Kinect that they're making it the secondary default controller for XBOX. What's exactly WRONG with shipping it with Kinect in the box, except I guess the cost factor?i agree with you that consoles need to offer more in order to make money and stay relevant but consumers should be given a choice and console manufactures, both sony and MS and Even Ninty are not listening to what the consumers want, both the ps4 and xbox 1 will ship with motion sensing cameras that will be needed for some games (every one does not have a hugh living room and what about a paralysed gamer how will the kinect or eye toy benefit him/her etc).
I think Nintendo could end up going software only on consoles. But that joint development idea is hooey, it'll never fly. There are other ways to maintain console costs, by doing what Nintendo did with the Wii and keeping the specs down so the base hardware was profitable.the only way i think console costs could be maintained is if a joint development will happen eg. the 3 manufacturers develop a console together, it has the same specs but each one can decide how theirs look and each one can choose their own OS and maintain their exclusive on individual platforms, that would also save developers time an costs from porting their code to individual architectures.
