its all about saving electricity, costs and reducing heat etc. a few years ago pc's didnt have 1 onboard component, these days you dont need a single expansion card on your mobo in order for your pc to run. it might seem implausible now but in a few years it will be the now, just have a look at how intel is investing like crazy on their intergrated graphics.
its the same with cars in the 70's every idiot had a v8 muscle car in the us because petrol was cheap, these days a honda crz hybrid is faster than those cars, look at how things have changed



How different is that architecture to that of these new next gen consoles? Or is that last A-Series what the new consoles will be sporting?
