Remember that Tessellation has been used in ATi cards since the x800 cards (could be before that) so the performance benefits have been proven. It just took Microsoft up until now to include it as a standard in DX11.
Now it is an industry standard so it will be supported.
I remember watching he dolphin demo more than 5 years ago on my ATi card and found the technology impressive. I found it odd that it took so long to be added as a standard.
