Pretty much this. We've had clients come to us and ask for Linux before and we simply say no. One of the government departments told us that the whole gov is going on linux and we're going to lose the business if we don't convert. That was years ago (they're still on Windows) and even if we lose all gov clients, it still wouldn't be worth the trouble.

No guts, no glory, no brain, same story.

They were sold when they heard the word "free" and the idea is to completely move away from Microsoft. I still think it is a dream though because they do use a lot of custom applications that won't be available for Linux.

Not to mention the enormous amounts of training they'd need to do to smooth out the transition. It would be a total disaster.

It has everything to do with computer literacy. If more people realized how restricted windows is, many would ditch it and go over to Linux. Meaning a larger market for Linux.

Right. Linux is much messier than windows in terms of drivers and standards. But as one dev said,
Common wisdom in the games industry is that you can't make money making games for Linux simply because the market isn't big enough. That's why AAA shops don't do Linux ports any more.
^This is the main reason why almost no linux ports are made. And why is the market so small? Because everybody uses windows. If more people understood the advantages of linux , and not go for the macOS or windows simplicity crap, the linux market would be much bigger.

Also what stops the devs from building their games with openGL, if there was a bigger linux market? Sure , there are more costs involved in developing and testing cross platform, won't that be covered by the linux sales then.

If only audio and debugging ( which i saw is terrible ) on linux could be improved, gdb being slow as f**k , requiring a lot more thinking than ide, then linux would be near perfect IMO.

Linux. The only reason I stay with windows is for gaming. I mostly program in ruby so Linux is a must.

Linux is more suited for programmers, although I am frustrated at some of the bugs that Windows has,I use it on a daily basis for work and gaming.

I'm a fairly computer literate individual. I know how restrictive Windows is. I still largely prefer to work in Windows because of the ease of use and conformance with professional standards and software. Every interaction I've had with Linux has been frustrating from start to end.

Right. Linux is much messier than windows in terms of drivers and standards.
Most people gladly sacrifice openness for drivers and standards.

    But as one dev said,

Why did games developers flock to iOS within the past few years? Apple provided a safe haven and a way to monetise, and users were paying money for the games. Linux has had the opportunity to do something in gaming for years and they've just flubbed it.

I enjoy both but unfortunately almost none of the software in my line of work is viable on Linux.
Nothing is permitted, everything is true.
