Default Call of Duty: Ghosts' new engine still iterative and, not built from scratch

When Infinity Ward talks about Call of Duty: Ghosts' new engine, the term "new" carries an implied asterisk, at least according to animation lead Zach Volker. "When we're talking about a new engine, we're talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine – we're not talking about throwing it all away and saying we're starting from the ground up," Volker told Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

Creating a brand-new, from-scratch engine on Infinity Ward's production timeline would require "an army of 200 engineers" according to Volker, so the distinction of "new" is made by how significantly upgraded the latest version of the engine is, as compared to the last.

"We say okay, what are the things that are significant," Volker said, "that are encompassing of the engine or its visual quality? Are those being upgraded in a significant way? Alright then, I think that warrants that we've got a new engine on our hands."

so essentially there's still some 14 year old quake 3 id tech code stuffed in there somewhere.

I don't know if there's going to be another truly new engine. None of the next gen engines are completely new. That isn't a bad thing.

Use the word "new" to entice gamers that it's something built from ground up, where in reality, it's yet ANOTHER tweak to an already existing engine. Surprised and unsurprised.

What they showed at the MS presser looked to me like a slightly upgraded CoD engine, nothing about it screamed next-gen to me. Even BF3, a current gen game still looks a lot better than what they showed.

What difference does it actually make to you? The graphics are sufficiently upgraded that it wouldn't change anything if they'd built the engine from scratch or overhauled it. Unreal Engine 4 is also built on UE3's framework. As are Cryengine 3 and Frostbite 3. Windows 8 is built from windows 7 which is built from windows vista and so on.

I wouldn't say that at all. BF4 looks way better though.

Since I've never owned a single copy of Call of Duty, I cannot really have any input or say regarding the game. It would have been nice to see something different - having said that; it is actually different. A few more detailed bump maps here and there
