Default AMD’s Xbox One Project Valued At Over $3 billion

Bob Feldstein, who previously worked for AMD, has revealed the valuation of the Xbox One deal between AMD and Microsoft.

He is currently the VP of Technology Licensing at Nvidia and he says that the project is valued at over $3 billion. The amount should probably include all the expenses like design and should also cover the the costs for parts required to supply over the course of the system’s lifecycle.

In retrospect, Sony had spent $400 million on the Cell processor which was a joint project with Toshiba, so this has to be a multi-year deal with Microsoft.

On his LinkedIn account (membership required), he states that his ”involvement was focused on business management and supply agreement negotiations.”

He also adds that, “AMD provided a custom silicon solution to Microsoft for the Xbox One, a game console and entertainment device.

“This required the coordination of multiple functional teams within AMD, as well as regular customer meetings with leadership teams responsible for handling the challenges of complex, muti-year deals. This project is valued at $3+B.”

Sony and Nintendo have also used AMD parts in their consoles. Based on the Xbox One estimate, it looks like Sony and AMD may have struck a similar deal, and Sony uses a significantly powerful GPU in the PS4 compared to what’s in the Xbox One, so it’s hard to say exactly how much the deal must have cost.

One thing is for clear though, AMD will make a mark in the next console generation and they should be pleased with that.

That is pretty damn impressive, Well done to AMD for securing the contract.

AMD shouldn't even be a thing anymore but somehow they keep going. The new APUs are also quite impressive.

They are far from going down, in fact their stock prices are going up each and every day.
They have pulled off something epic, now we just need to wait for steamroller.

I'm not even a AMD fan and I know this is a huge deal and the are far from dead in the water. AMD have some great chips and this proves how they are stepping up and laying the challenge at Intel.

I've always been a bit of an AMD (cpu) fan at heart (Nvidia on GPU though). It's insanely hard to compete with Intel at their own game - single core performance - but they seem to be finding some great ways to bypass that.

You're - you are. Your - possessive pronoun.

Where did I say they should be closed up? I just meant that based on their performance for the past few years it's hardly feasible that they're still in the game. They haven't been able to compete with Intel on performance since LGA775, and it only got worse with Bulldozer. I had AM3 though for a couple of years, right up until my current Sandy Bridge setup - Bulldozer killed it for me. I just couldn't see them fixing the gulf of single-thread performance to beat Intel head to head. And they still haven't gotten that side right, but they've been doing some great things with integrated and low-power systems.

Well currently I'm running an i5 2400 and a 7790 so I guess that shoots my statement clear in the head. But I change my hardware a LOT, and I just prefer Nvidia drivers. Every time I get a new AMD GPU I need to rescale my TV borders, and I think the Subpixel-AA is fuzzier on AMD than Nvidia. I guess the CPU thing is more about them being the long-time underdogs and I just want to root for them.

Good grief I always have to explain myself ad nauseum in this place. I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes, 'k?
