MS will probably change some of their policies... they'll have to if they don't want this to completely fail.
It is good to have competition though. It prevents Microsoft from doing whatever the heck they want like with Windows 8 and Office 2013. Now they'll basically have to adapt or die.
However, not that I think this will be the case, but if they reduce the price of their games to the same as PC, 2nd hand sales won't really be such a big issue.

Sony's business model is by far the better of the two. They learned the hard way when they brought out the PS3. They were too arrogant and full of themselves. Now it's Microsoft's turn. Not that they are arrogant exactly, they knew that gamers were going to freak out completely. Maybe they're hoping that many of us will just give it a try...... but I don't have many $499 tries to give.
That being said, it's gotten to the point where I'm thinking of waiting for the "Slim" editions of both consoles before getting them. I'm gonna have to wait a year or so but it will be the better idea considering everything that's been going on.....
