Default E3 2013: AMD Introduces 'World's First' 5GHz Consumer CPU

In addition to its next-generation APUs unveiled last week, AMD has announced the FX-9590 — the world's first 5GHz processor made available to consumers. While experienced overclockers have been able to drive other chips to 5GHz, this is the first part to come stock at that frequency. It features an 8-core "Piledriver" architecture and ships unlocked, so PC users can push the clock even farther. The company also announced the FX-9370, which features the same 8-core architecture, but comes at a slightly lower clock of 4.7GHz.

Pricing and release information have not been disclosed.

Doubt so, considering their newer products are quite reasonable. Look at at the A10 6800k.

Estimates around $200 for the fx-9590.

The main problem is that overclocking an 8350 to 5ghz only really gains you about 14% performance and has a pretty big TDP jump for it. It's a very inefficient way of trying to compete with Intel. They should be capitalising on Intel's lack of momentum on desktop right now by unleashing their 28nm set, instead of just stopgapping with this gimmickry.

Both are eight-core chips with extremely high turbo boost speeds. Intel beware!
