Default military-style operation to combat Rhino poaching.

Really hope this comes to fruition.

    You mean drones.

Pretty sure they've had military support for a good while already.

Yes, including the Idols, perma-culture, motorbike and Martin Luther references.

NB what follows is utterly depressing - that way lies madness. Turn back now while you have a chance.

Anyway I was referring to this:
    http://www.dod.mil.za/operations/poaching/rhino.htm

My point was that we've got actual military there already...with armed planes and helicopters and actual soldiers. It hasn't even made a dent because thats not the problem.

The problem is that R500 000 sounds mighty good to a poor unemployed person for a week's work. And if they get caught the courts just toss the case out for lack of evidence. Or they deport them back to Moz - in which case they'll be back next week to try again.

I've contributed to rhino campaigns myself, but still it breaks my heart to see all these people meaning well but ultimately barking up the wrong tree.

The vast majority of the people don't seem to realize what game is being played here, let alone what rules apply or how to win it. Think about the South American drug wars. Similar circumstance...poor people, huge profit, cartels involved. When the authorities cracked down on their distribution channels them the cartels bought/built small submarines. A direct approach just doesn't work - I'm telling you these poachers will bring in shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles if they have to. The point is when you've got those three (poor people, huge profits & cartels) you've literally only got two options left: fix one of those 3 conditions or fundamentally change the game.

Fixing the 3 conditions isn't gonna happen in SA anytime soon, which leaves us with fundamentally changing the game. In this case that means surgically removing the horns. This will cost a serious fortune & hurt tourism, but we're kinda out of viable & effective options here. Its going to take another couple of thousand dead rhinos and about 2 years until the government realize this, but I assure you that is where this will end.

In the mean time our government is still going to try the direct approach - I hear they want to build a fence. Sorta like the Americans did with their Mexico border. Its not a bad move since part of the problem is all the random people migrating through the Kruger making poachers hard to identify - but ultimately it won't result in a solution because it doesn't change any of the variables at play - its a minor inconvenience to the poachers at best.

Next time you cut your toenails grind them up into a powder ( or not) and send them through to the Chinese embassy. Toenails are made from the same stuff as Rhino horn so let's up the supply and drop the prices

how can a turn back when you took the time to write all that?

ya, change the game. I heard some way out there idea of legalising the rhino horn and starting rhino farms. Again, huge money involved.
I also heard about game farms removing the rhino horns themselves but the poachers shot the rhinos anyway, out of spite.

    I like the toenail idea
