Interesting fact of the day

There's a GIF for that
I come across a lot of interesting facts everyday and though it might be a good idea to share them here, and I hope other people will contribute as well.

Will start with a few...

  • Terry Pratchet's daugter, Rhianna Pratchett, was the writer of Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge, and several other games.
  • Patrick Stewart lost his hair at the age of 18 due to alopecia. The traumatic experience made Stewart timid, and he found that acting served as a means of self-expression.
  • Andre the Giant once drank 127 beers in a hotel bar, passed out in the lobby, and, because he was so large, no one could move him until he woke up.

Please try to cite sources where possible, leave opinions and jokes out of this thread and keep it interesting. Also avoid "lists of interesting facts" as those tend to be filled with made up nonsense and urban legends.

Share and enjoy! :D

Hey motherfuckers, this isn't the e-sports thread :p

Interesting fact:

Samuel L Jackson first used the word 'Motherfucker' because it helped overcome a lifelong stuttering problem. Jackson revealed that the swear word wards off a stutter he has been battling since his childhood in Tennessee.

The first German serviceman killed in the war was killed by the Japanese (China, 1937)

6 bomber crewmen were killed for each one wounded

40,000 men served on U-Boats during World War 2; 30,000 never returned

It was a common practice on fighter planes to load every 5th found with a tracer round to aid in aiming. That was a mistake. The tracers had different ballistics so (at long range) if your tracers were hitting the target, 80% of your rounds were missing. Worse yet, the tracers instantly told your enemy he was under fire and from which direction. Worst of all was the practice of loading a string of tracers at the end of the belt to tell you that you were out of ammo. That was definitely not something you wanted to tell the enemy. Units that stopped using tracers saw their success rate nearly double and their loss rate go down.

A number of air crewmen died of farts. (ascending to 20,000 ft. in an un-pressurized aircraft causes intestinal gas to expand 300%!)

84 German Generals were executed by Hitler

During the Japanese attack on Hong Kong, British officers objected to Canadian infantrymen taking up positions in the officer’s mess. No enlisted men allowed!

Interesting fact:

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words.

There are a lot of interesting and random phobias out there. Dendrophobia is the fear of trees. Blennophobia is the fear of slime. And neophobia is the fear of anything new. However, the fear of long words may have the most ironic (and cruelest name).

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. So let’s say you do have this phobia. You’d be terrify to name your ailment. Kind of a conundrum.
