Default Race quotas in rugby step backwards: FF Plus

The SA Rugby Union's (Saru) introduction of a new quota system in domestic rugby was a step backwards, the Freedom Front Plus said on Wednesday.

"Just as previously, it will unnecessarily again place sportspeople of colour under suspicion and undermine their confidence as the stigma of a so-called quota-player will be created through this," spokesman Anton Alberts said in a statement.

The FF Plus viewed the move as an attempt by the African National Congress to...read more here: Race quotas in rugby step backwards: FF Plus

Sad that it comes to this, but how else do you get unions and teams to move forward.

That said, I do hope that SARU has been doing their job of developing these players all the way through from schools to a place where they are ready to take the step up to the big time. Else this is going to being a travesty for players, teams and country.

Might not be a bad thing, only sorry they do not do it for all sports.

Here is my question for the day. If these quotas are there to create a more racially inclusive team then where is the quota in soccer for white players?

Surely if we want to have teams that represent the nation racially then why don't we have this for all sports. To say that only one race is being restricted from participation is racist and unconstitutional. Therefore to be in line with the constitution I believe quotas should be in place in all teams, for all sports and for all races should be represented.

Well said, what I don't understand is why this has to be at a national level, if it is to help people of colour emerge in sports, then surely the quota should at least be restricted to entry level events, e.g where do the Sharks U21 recruit from, if more emphasis was placed on getting previously disadvantage players access to these rugby clubs and schools, possibly on sports bursary's then surely they would naturally filter through to our national teams based on merit alone

The irony is that there are non- white players starting to break through so this isn't even necessary

I see plenty of white players, maybe if you watched local footie you would also have noticed them, not every team has white players, but soccer hasn't been such a success story as rugby over the years. . .

In any case, most of you would not want anyone else but Bryan Habana on the wing, or the Beast at prop or Gio Aplon, JP Peterson or Siya Kolisi in your teams, so what is the big issue now?

But are those white players in the soccer teams there from merit or a quota rule? I'm not complaining about black players in rugby but rather a rule to enforce their position on the team, regardless of their credibility as a asset to the team, based purely on the colour of their skin.
