Why the US backed him - obviously, for money. Companies made billions.
Why Russia backed him - when Hitler attacked the USSR borders his forces absolutely crushed the reds. There were armies literally scattered and isolated from each other, hundreds of thousands surrendering before even fighting. You know why? The reds were preparing for an attack, not for defense. All of their defenses were taken down - including removal of bombs from bridges, disbanding partisan groups, removal of front line defenses and so forth. Stalin's plan was to destroy Hitler's force and liberate the whole of europe. That is why he and the US backed him up - they could have crushed him any time, but that wouldn't bring any profit.
Now imagine if Stalin's plan worked (which almost did - his plan of attack was just a few weeks late before Hitler attacked him) and liberated europe? Russia would be an economic and military powerhouse - huge to such an extent you cannot imagine. You would see statutes of Stalin , textbooks about the russian heroes who saved the world. Of course the US government knew this. Why do you think when Russia begged them to open a second front all they did was give them some supplies - which to this day they claim that their supplies played a big role in russia's victory. When Hitler's army was already destroyed and the red army was marching through germany to berlin, the americans showed up in berlin claiming victory and claiming half of berlin for themselves. Their war was against the japs - which they themselves provoked after placing the embargo on japan. Their expansion in Asia would be dangerous for the US. The 2 atom bombs were the final blow to stop their expansion - the japs were already beaten back and in no state to fight any further when the bombs were dropped, sort of like punch the guy on the ground out so he doesn't stand back up for a long time .So now you see in every school textbook how the US played a BIG role in bringing down nazi germany, how they were the heroes who saved the world.
