Any thoughts on XCOM unknown territory? I'm curious!

I found 0 AD pretty boring. I played it in April and it was pretty much an Age of Empires 2 clone.

What you guys are saying makes sense. I think another issue that has cropped up is the fact that gamers as culture are far less patient than we used to be. Say like 7/8 years ago (when strategy games where in their heyday), you never really knew when your next big game was going to release. You took what you could get in terms of gaming and strategy games offered enough replay value to sustain you till the next game you really wanted to play came out. Now however with the advent of DLC, Profile Achievements and almost every game having some form of multiplayer(whether functional or not); makes the significance of a strategy game a lot less. You don't need to have to learn and relearn different forms of military strategy and base building. You just download a new mission pack for BF3 or new cosmetics for SF4. or better yet just play more Angry Birds...you dont have to think while you do that.

BTW You guys should really play Total War : Shogun 2. Really an amazingly crafted game. And the most fun I've ever had was with Battle For Middle Earth 2.

This topic is extremely saddening for me too .

I enjoy RTS games far more than other genres.

Battle for Middle Earth 2 was probably my favourite. It was something about how the battles played out. Not too short or too long, great use of monsters, heroes, nice scale etc.

I really really (really) wanted a Battle for Middle Earth 3, but I really doubt that's ever going to happen ( insert man tears).

Rts fan here mainly the cnc series: generals and xpack, tiberium games upto kanes wrath, red alert series upto yuri's revenge.

Ra3 just felt disjointed and messed up. Cnc 4 i don't even want to speak about.

Another cool series that was great but the sequel messed up is Ground Control.

Special mentions for Act of War, World in Conflict and Company of Heroes

And of course Dawn of War 1 and 2

    Play games, not platforms

Does warhammer 40 000 Dawn of war fall into the rts. Since that and COH is the only one I seem to be able to get into. Civ 5 I tried but don't have such a long time to learn the game.

Ah, BFME2 was simply amazing. Many laughs were had when noobs who didn't understand the game mechanics lost entire armies by rushing their cavalry into pikemen.

It's such a pity the game is no longer played in MP. It was truly one of the best strategy games from the last decade.

CoH and DoW definitely fall under strategy and they're astonishing examples of RTS games. I loved DoW especially.

CnC really dropped the ball after the release of Kane's Wrath. But I guess they couldnt keep up the legacy forever. Although I didn't really enjoy Dawn of War 2. I think the best Dawn of War game was Dark Crusade...unless you go up against necrons

That's easily remedied - just play as the Dark Necrons.

Although I had a soft spot for playing as the Space Marines in the conquer the galaxy campaign.
