Default The desolation of Smaug - 13 December 2013

To the Tolkien fans out there, the latest trailer has been released and I can't wait for this one to come out. It's definitely darker than the 1st one - as was The two towers.

It almost looks for a second around 1:28 as if Beorn makes an appearance as well!

Anyone here also a fan of the Silmarillion?

I watched the trailer yesterday and felt no excitement for this movie, yes the trailer looks good but the first movie felt like an extra long extended cut just for PJ to justify making this into a trilogy, the stone giant fight, the dwarves washing up Bilbo's plates and a few other things come to mind.

I will still watch it but there is no magic for me like after I watched Fellowship, I was so excited for Towers that my bro and I watched the first screening on opening day. . .

I really enjoyed it but even the book wasn't as good as lord of the rings. My mom feels the same way as you do.

Deathly Hallows was split, Mockinjay is getting split, Twilight was split studios are cashing in and that is unfortunately the world we live in today.

Yeah i agree there. The hobbit should always have been one movie only. It wouldve been an epic & cut out all the nonsense clutter considering that it is essentially a children's novel. I wouldve liked to see it sustain that.

Im a huge fan of tolkiens writings and still re-read the silmarillion, which is why im excited to see beorn (beren being my favourite character) and Thranduil but i didn't like what they did to poor radagast one bit. He was an awesome istari & pj turned him into a pothead for comic relief.

I can only imagine the studios did this to milk every last cent out of the already existing sets they had since lotr days.

I'm going to enjoy it, I love the books and the movies, I have no problem watching extended cuts of the hobbit(I know they are pulling it out a fair amount, but who cares!? it's the Hobbit!) can't wait for my kids to watch this while i'm watching their little imaginations going BOOOOOOMMMM

Capitalist greed. At most, the Hobbit justified two movies, not three.

Personally I would LOVE to see HBO or the likes thereof make a mini series about the Silmarillion. Each chapter could be an hour long episode that's pretty secluded from the rest and it would be vastly superior to the movies. Unfortunately Christopher Tolkien won't let anyone NEAR the rights for it.

    Agreed!

The writing in the Silmarillion is a lot more 'dense' than The Hobbit, if that makes sense? Also, as you point out, each chapter is almost it's own stand-alone story, interconnected as they are.

The Hobbit is essentially just one story, with very few story arcs, so you could do it justice in one movie, maybe two. To me, three is stretching the story out waaaay beyond what it actually was.
