Yes it would , but I would think that DirectX is not the only draw back , there are so many diffrent things to consider.
But it would be great to have games on linux .
I have a Gentoo and Kubuntu box
and use XP for games ....

Why would game studios invest R&D in linux when the fast majority of their userbase is windows pc gamers or console gamers?? They are not going to invest in linux or apple unless the number of users on those platforms grow a lot.

Yeah could not agree more but then opengl would have to make a huge push to catch up to DX atm. I would prefer playing in linux since I never have to worry about it giving me the message the game has stopped working...

I work on 80+ linux servers every day. I would like to stay FAR AWAY from it when it comes to gaming time at home. Windows 7 for me please

Well it isnt bad if you have the capp to spare... trying to get games to work on linux is a mission it seems. so many packages you have to download to get them to work. After that there might be some bugs within the game, where your mouse doesnt work or your keyboard keys dont work ect. It still wont compare to windows, and the games are made to be fully utilized on windows.

Nice article - it's great to see some exposure on Linux gaming. And to be fair quite a few titles run under Wine these days. A number of the smaller developers release games ported to Linux as well (Frets of Fire, World of Goo etc) so it's not all bad.

Zim: Oh, you'll open them. You have to breath sometime.
Dib: No, I - Wait... What do eyes have to do with breathing?

DirectX is probably the biggest reason for gamers being locked into Windows. Games using the OpenGL API are very easy to get to run on Linux, or almost any O/S for that matter, even if they don't run natively.

Linux enthusiasts attempts at reimplementing the DirectX API in Linux has been slow and flaky. Granted, they do it as a hobby and for the love of gaming, but even today, they still have a long way to go.

DirectX 9 support is OK, you can get a good amount of DX9 games to run with some tinkering, but with DX11 right around the corner, the amount of catch up to be done, especiialy by hobbyists, is staggering.
