Picking a GPU for gaming

Ironically me and my mate were talking about upgrading this morning... well ti was more a debate about whether he should get the R9 280x even though he doesnt really need it

In his case, I'd wait a month and see what the prices of the R9 290 are like and watch how Nvidia counters them. Also, HD7970 cards still qualify for the game bundle, although at this stage I wonder what AMD's going to do with Never Settle Forever.
