Question Affordable PC setup advice needed.

    Hi all,

I am re-entering the PC gaming scene after 4 years of playing predominantly console games.

I need to get a new PC box (CPU, MB<RAM<Hdd, Vid Card, etc excluding screen) as my current box is totally out of date. I have an old AMD 2400XP 46bit CPU with 2 gig ram and a GeForce 6600GT.

Any ideas on what I could get that will cost sub R6000-R7000 and will run games smoothly at good-high quality.

I don't need a screen as I use a 24" Samsung SyncMaster and it is still good.

    Thanks.

My advice usually for my clients is to start with the graphics card and then work backwards. I reckon for R7k you should be able to get a decent mid range card like a GTX650 2GB and maybe squeeze an i5 CPU in there. Depending on which version of Windows you buy with the machine.

Try and get a GTX660 (if you're going with Nvidia) if you can. Nvidia are dropping the prices on their cards, which will probably take a while to impact our market, but if you're playing at 1080p, then a 660 would be a much better option.

Also, maybe ask a mod to move this to the Computer Hardware sub-forum? You'd probably get more helpful responses there. Ahem...Mr Joker will probably be able to help you out.

Great, thanks! I was looking at the GTX660. I have to get a new work laptop so was also thinking of maybe adding a bit more and getting a much better lappy with an Nvidia 750M chip. 2 birds with one stone.

Wow a 6600GT, what a vintage and kickass card that was. If I lived in Cape Town I would've bought it from you, just for nostalgia's sake

Ha ha. Yeah, I tried running a shader mod in Minecraft and my card couldn't manage that. The shader model on my card is that outdated. Ish. I also can't run Fraps (for recording game sessions) and a game at the same time. Upgrade is needed.
