WoW *could* work as a free-to-play model like GuildWars. If you consider the average spend of a WoW player on a monthly basis, I'm sure it's higher than $15 (this includes ingame as well as real-world stuff).
Now if you can rework the model slightly and keep that average spend but double or triple your users by making it free to play? Rollin' in the dough

FTP will never happen in wow blizz is too greedy and stubborn when it comes to wow, i'm on a dead sever atm (hence not playing for the past year) and they don't even give a free char migration from that dead server to any other semi decent server.
No free char transfers to said server even from over populated servers which tells me that ftp will never happen for wow or at least not in my lifetime
