Was only possible with the old 40 or 80 gig models ........ after that, apparently not at all.

This is still a rumour. The actually story is that the PSN network is going to see the entire PS2 collection come alive via download. Sony is working on not and emulator, but some what of a digital recode of the ps2 games so that they work on the PS3... Hey but we'll never know up until Sony actually says something.

Correction Mephisto, only the 20GB and 60GB were backwards compatible.
In the NA/JP regions there were limited edition 80GB machines with BC.

Only the 60GB were BC over here

Since release of the Slim, Sony said they not working on PS2 emulation but who knows they could still change their mind

Yeh the 20 and 60gig can also support PS2 functionalities as well which is great... from what i also heard is that you can downgrade from an 80 to a 60gig and then use it for backwards functionality....

This is not possible as they the 80GB model had the emotion Chip emulator to play PS2 games removed. The 60GB model could do it and the short lived 20GB model were the only true European backward compatible models. PSone support is across the board though.
