Thread: SteamOS is here!

    Default SteamOS is here!

I did not know if this is a subject for Consoles or PC gaming but here goes.

    SteamOS is out http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown

SteamOS Beta is the first public release of our Linux-based operating system. The base system draws from Debian 7, code named Debian Wheezy. Our work builds on top of the solid Debian core and optimizes it for a living room experience. Most of all, it is an open Linux platform that leaves you in full control. You can take charge of your system and install new software or content that you want.
With a small catch on the hardware section:

What are the SteamOS Hardware Requirements?
Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
    Memory: 4GB or more RAM
Hard Drive: 500GB or larger disk
    Video Card: NVIDIA graphics card
(AMD and Intel graphics support coming soon!)
    Additional: UEFI boot support
    USB port for installation
Pity about the ATI part so not gonna happen to my media PC

Anyway an unofficial torrent can be found here: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:1e4dae83371ba704d5d89e1828068e f0c4151e32&dn=SteamOSInstaller.zip&tr=udp%3A%2F%2F tracker.openbittorrent.com%3A80%2Fannounce&tr=udp% 3A%2F%2Ftracker.publicbt.com%3A80%2Fannounce

    Enjoy.

Be aware, there is currently only unattended installations available, and these format your entire system. There is currently no way to dual boot SteamOS with another OS.

Thanks for the heads up, I was actually just wondering if I could dual boot to try it.

I was two thirds into the download when I read that! It's a pity, but the source code it out, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

I wonder what the specs will be for a steam machine that functions only for streaming games from a windows PC when the streaming feature becomes available...

Would be nice if a Raspberry Pi can fill that role but I'm guessing it's too under-specced.
One day, I'll grow up and become responsible.
    Probably not today.
