Default AVG irritating the [email protected] out of me

    Hey guys,

just wanting to roll this one past you maybe someone has come across this. This last week AVG 2013 (got the full internet suite) started giving me this.

    Name: avg error.png

Size: 19.4 KB

This pops up every 10 - 15 minutes. I have googled it but to no avail as nobody can give a concrete answer to the problem. It looks like it detects the virus in windows files (in my mind new updates). I am currently running Windows 8.1.

    Any ideas?

Switch off windows update completely and see if it still pops up. If yes then you've got a problem.

tbh it sounds like AVG fcked up their AV signatures...again...if true then they'll fix it their side.

Also do a full system scan...the 15 min cycle could also be the PC getting re-infected from a hidden source.

If you're paranoid then you can run some online AV scans:

eset also has one but I've only used the trendmicro one.

AVG is crap. Really bad. Rather use MSE/Defender or something else that actually does the job...

You're a little behind on the flavour of the month...MSE recently made the news for 39% miss rate

Make of that what you want but I'd be wary of that MSE>AVG recommendation.

lol MSE is literally the worst AV you can install.

Lolling aside... I haven't had a virus in a very long time so either mse/defender or just common sense.

After I ditched AVG for killing half of my files on my PC, I switched to Avast (silent/gaming mode), never get a notification ever again.

I agree with Necuno. Go with MSE/Defender and common sense. The advantage of Defender is that you don't even know about it yet if someone plugs in an infected USB stick then it catches it immediately.

lol'ing indeed. I'm using MSE anyway too despite knowing that its inferior. Then again...not running mission critical stuff so as you say common sense + MSE will do.

Though I can't help but comment on this:
    >I haven't had a virus in a very long time
That could serve as proof of the AV being very good, or blind as a bat....
