Default 2 shot in Florida movie theatre

(CNN) - It started with a father texting his daughter during the previews of a movie.

It ended with the 43-year-old father shot dead amid the theater seats, and a 71-year-old retired police officer in custody in the shooting.

The incident Monday in Wesley Chapel, Florida, escalated from an objection to cell phone use, to a series of arguments, to the sudden and deadly shooting, according to police and witnesses.

As a male moviegoer texted, the man seated behind him objected, and asked the texter to put his phone away.

They argued several times, according to police and witnesses, and the man who was texting watched as the other man walked out of the theater. Curtis Reeves, a retired police officer, apparently went seeking a theater employee to complain about the texting, police said.

Two seats away Charles Cummings and his son watched the squabbling.

When Reeves returned, he was without a manager.

"He came back very irritated," Cummings said.

The man who had been texting, Chad Oulson, got up and turned to Reeves to ask him if he had gone to tell on him for his texting. Oulson reportedly said, in effect: I was just sending a message to my young daughter.

Voices were raised. Popcorn was thrown. And then came something unimaginable -- except maybe in a movie. A gun shot.

I think this is disgusting, he was previously a police over so he should know not to use a gun in a case like this.

That's why I very rarely go to a cinema these days. I hate it when people talk and are on their phones and texting and whatnot.

It spoils the movie and it costs so much that it's just better to wait to watch it at home.

People have way too little respect for other people.

Agreed. There is a video on YouTube by surfers, they feel they where being harassed by life guards who told them the can't surf at the beach. However I remember from my short stink as a life guard that surfers can't mix with swimmers since there is the risk that a surfer killing a swimmer who isn't fast enough to avoid him.

People are aren't very respectful to others and then these shootings happen when the straw breaks.

Agreed Solitude, but we still love taking our boys to the cinema. We haven't, touch wood, had a bad experience like you refer you.

From the story, it is difficult to understand how texting someone can interfere with a movie, but I guess we all have stuff that irritates us. In the end a life was lost, such a waste.

I am cinema free since 2003, True Story.

I do miss the Drive in though

Sometimes there are people that make noise and are inconsiderate, but usually they just get told to shut up, and do so very quickly. I don't go very often, but I still do enjoy it every now and again. As much as I hate inconsiderate people, I don't think they deserve to be shot.

I also hate it too especially certain people who laugh so loud you can't hear anything which is happening in the movie plus noisy kids so I watch my movies at home through my 3d tv instead for some 3d action .

I got into a brawl at a cinema once when I was wrongly accused of tossing popcorn at someone (it was the group of knobs behind me) it got so serious that I literally had to actually punch the guy. I find it ridiculous how fast people get agitated in cinemas.

Just this past weekend I had the most popular women in the world sitting behind me while enjoying 47 Ronin. After about 20 phone calls I asked her to kindly respect the quality others pay for when coming to the cinema and to kindly refrain from using her phone - shockingly she obliged, I was expecting a b1tch-fit.
