Thread: Health Nuts

OP just watch the insoluble fibers if you're cutting carbs...the lack thereof can rain on your parade and screw with your digestion.

    1) Buy water bottles. The big 1.5L sodastream ones. Buy a different colour one for each family member so that you can drink directly from the bottle without worrying. Just having the bottles near you dramatically increases water intake. Struggling to find 1.5Ls at the moment though (mine need replacing). Oh and skip the carbonated stuff part - get the bottles and use tap water.

    2) Jogging is fantastic. Just me, the road and some music (ipod). I love jogging late at night - prevents overheating and makes it easier to get into the right zone (this varies I'd imagine). Watch the security though...realistically you can't do the late night thing on the open road.

    3) Research seems to back HIIT. Though I must admit I've not tried this with sufficient consistency to comment on outcome.

    4) Healthy eating seems to either fly or crash&burn at the shopping phase. I've made a conscious decision that I'm OK with burning through money...if it gets me a healthy & varied diet and contributes to my happiness. So I'm the guy who is buying that smoked salmon you can't afford...but I gave the chocolate bar & coke a miss.

    5) Salads. Make it big. Add the fancy ingredients. It'll rock. ProTip...the physical salad leaves...you can't save money there. Buy the best & most expensive stuff you can find. I usually buy the salad leaves from WW and the rest of the ingredients from PnP. Protip 2...if you've got access to discovery vitality then you can coin it big time on the 25% cash back. Pretty much all the ingredients you need for salads qualify.

    6) Get a decent but moderate amount of sun. Bad things happen if you don't.

    7) Go to a pharmacy and ask for folic acid. Costs peanuts and is a good plan to supplement overall. Water soluable so pretty harmless. NB Ask at the prescription counter. They'll give you a no-name brand batch of pills. The pharmacists are cool with handing this stuff out so just ask them how many you should take. I also believe a good multi-vit is a solid plan...just to catch any gaps in my nutrition. Presumably 95% of it gets pissed out as expensive urine...but as I said...I care about the gaps.

And finally remember...health is a marathon, not a sprint.

Flippin gym membership. Super pissed that I didn't buy gym equipment for home instead of the gym membership.

Basically the smartest comment in this whole thread. That's what I'm doing, and my weight is coming down, fast!

    Agreed on the Gym membership.

The water bottle thing is what I do - I just buy a cheap 1.5L bottle of water from pnp and use that for two months and replace it. But then again I have always been the weird kid who drank water instead of oros :P

As for salads - if you have a garden - go get some different lettuce plants (our Stodels sell them mixed in trays of 6) and plant it in your garden = you score since the tray will cos you about R20 - R30 and you will have salad leaves for at least 6 months before having to replace them. We also grow our own cherry tomatoes and spinach - baby spinach leaves are awesome in salads, the cooked spinach (boil a kettle of water throw it over the spinach till the go soft, rinse immediately with ice cold water to stop cooking - this way it looses less of the nutrients and then you can freeze it and add to pastas and and stirfry's you just heat is up). You will be surprised how awesome fresh salad and other veggies from the garden tastes compared to shop stuff. This is how we cut down the costs of healthy eating. Next up is clearing a bed for other veggies.

Its the natural way and it will benefit you in the long run.

I don't use weights as royal marines I talked to said its the best way to injure yourself. So everything I do is natural body weight and the results are awesome. Not trying to be a bulky guy bec those guys usually fail in the selection

I'm up to 50 lengths in the pool (25 breaststroke, 25 freestyle), 20 squats, 3 sets of 20 with 10kg dumbbells (can't use heavier coz of the stupid hernia, grr) and 15-20 mins on the bag per day. Best part is that while I feel absolutely pooped after, it's a good pooped and it dissipates the same day. The LCHF diet seems to work nicely hand in hand with the workout too, good energy levels.

Next week or the week after, I'm going to start walking ...... all uphills here where I live, eish

Then when you get fitter you must start running. It is a fantastic pooped feeling I for one can think a lot more clearer after my training.
