It's still my option if I don't win the PS4. The games will come. Unity and other big engines now support Linux and it's Steam that we are talking about here.
Plus I will have one big nice library that I can access from my pc or Steam Machine. Then there's the Steam specials and hell, imagine the bundles featuring Steam Machine games!
The console may be more expensive but the games will not be.
It's the ability to stream games from your Windows PC to the Steam machine that would be the killer-app for me. I have a huge backlog of windows games, most of which probably won't be converted to work on Linux. So to start another library filled with Linux games for the lounge would be foolish. The steam machines built for streaming would probably be lower specced and much cheaper as well. The big question is when Valve will release this feature.
But I'm getting one of those controllers, asap.
One day, I'll grow up and become responsible.
Probably not today.
I tend to agree with Marco in that these prices are just too high to validate me getting excited about this. It would be nice to have a smaller and much cheaper option like Mr. 44 suggested. I get the whole console gaming thing, I myself have been a console gamer for a very long time. But I'm not yet convinced that the Steam machine is a thing that I can get behind of. Sure, there will be many fans, and I think the idea of having a game orientated OS is amazing, but if I install SteamOS on my PC, why would I need to get another machine just to play in front of the TV?
I kinda like the the IBuyPower one and it's the only one looking as if it's in a decent price range. Unfortunately import costs in SA are a bit high...
I never realized that a lot of the games wont work on linux? I seem to remember reading something about all the games currently on steam will be supported on the steam OS? Correct me if im wrong here please? Coz this is a bit of a deal breaker...
Seems like your right, Found this...

One of the reasons you see such a wide variety of Steam Machine hardware is that only a smaller subset of games run natively on the SteamOS. Valve says that number stands at around 250 right now, and is growing. Game developers and publishers essentially have to port their games to SteamOS, much as they would to OS X or Xbox One. That means many of the more high-profile games (for example, Call of Duty: Ghosts), won't play out of the box on a pure Steam Machine.
