I used to try to categorise my library, but Steam kept "forgetting" my categories so I gave up. Now I just just have favourites, and I create desktop shortcuts for everything that I actually want to play.

I use Depressure just for this reason, to make a separate back-up from time to time, that I upload to my Dropbox.

I put them all in genre categories but I tend to just use the grid view anyway.

I have too many Steam games so I have to sub-divide them into categories, RPG/ FPS/ Indie etc. They've been working brilliantly.

Why not contain those shortcuts in just one folder? better yet why not mount that folder to rocketdock for a cleaner desktop

Because I don't want to. I like having them on my desktop so I can access them quickly.

i don't add any shortcuts of games to my desktop at all.
I just go to steam and sort according to installed games.

i realised i have way too many games installed. so i created groups of genres. this soon became tedious as you can only assign games to one group at a time when many games can easily fit into multiple groups. so i just use the favourites to list the games i am playing right now. i also stopped installing games i am not actively playing. my final rule is: no more than 10 games in my favourites.

now what i do is list by installed games, minimise all groups except my faves and then choose what to play. in the odd chance a mate wants to play something that is not in my favourites i simply type the name in the little filter ate the top and play away!

i just use the shorcuts created on my desktop after installing the game, so I just put them all in one folder under games and there it can be alfabetically sorted, date created and so on, you can even search for the game very easy now.But that is just what I do.
