Young people are showing interest in joining the SA Police Service, the police ministry said on Wednesday.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa visited Lentegeur in Cape Town on a recruitment drive on Wednesday morning, his spokesman Zweli Mnisi said.

Mnisi said the meeting with residents went well and that there were a number of young people in the audience keen to join the police.

They only want to join the police so they can do what they want and screw us over. Face it the news is full of the police getting away with murder, plus you get paid to sleep all day.

no if you have just a matric under your belt and cant find work, this is your best bet. the police and armed forces are always looking to recruit and standards are low for admission so you are almost guaranteed and income

Yeah I actually looked into this last week just as a potential option to get into a state job, but they send you off for 6 months' training and then 6 months' community work (could be wrong about the time frame) on a R2500 salary. Following that it quickly becomes much higher but I would never survive on R2500p.m.

Considering the horror stories I have heard of police "robbing" people I'm not surprised.

Bad working conditions, minimum wage, your civilian rights removed, being shot at, 1 vehicle for 12 night shift officers.

Yeah not for the feint hearted hey.

I respect the police force they do a extremely dangerous job and get no respect, sure there are corrupt cops but the vast majority are not.

That's my biggest gripe though, joining the police isn't something that people do to protect people these days. It's become just a job, the result is they don't respect the uniform or the job and they don't do a proper job anymore. That's when you get stories of police attacking halkers or selling uniforms to thieves
