Your Scary In-Game Moments

What are some of your scary in-game moments that have left you almost falling over your chair when playing them?

For me my scariest games include System Shock 2, the original AvP, the chapter We Don't Go To Ravenholm from Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R., The Suffering and Amnesia.

For F.E.A.R the ultimate moment for me was a part in the game where I walked across a catwalk and I could hear Alma laughing but I couldn't see her anywhere that is until I reached a ladder and as I tried to descend it she was right there behind me staring me in the face. I almost shat myself there and then! Another part was when Alma sprinted towards you on all fours through a sewer, it just look so inhuman the way she moved that it made it all the more scary.

I think I've already mentioned elsewhere on the forum what happened in the Suffering and if you want to know why that game made me scream like a little girl you can go hunt for that post!

Scariest for me would probably be the mirror room of the hospital in Silent Hill 3. Anyone who's played this game will know what I mean. Simply a room with a mirror and a sink, then slowly blood starts seeping out of the sink, then the walls, then over Heather (your character). Eventually the entire room is oozing with blood and then your reflection stops reflecting your actions and just stares at you. Gave me such chills back in the day. Such a basic but effective moment in gaming horror history.

DOOM 3 gave me some of the biggest frights ever. Having to choose between your gun and a flash light... And playing it late at night when it was completely quiet, headphones on. I damn near soiled my pants a few times.

The first F.E.A.R. also gave me a few scares, but felt a bit more predictable than DOOM 3 for me.

Edit : Most recently The Last of Us also had a few moments where my blood was pumping through me veins. Knowing there was a few lurkers around and I only had a few rounds left in my gun.

Yeah all 3 games were terrifying from start to finish, nevermind scary moments

In Amnesia when you get to the first water bit. It was so bad that I quit and only continued the next day.

And to think I stopped playing after the distorted vision parts right in the beginning of the game!

yeah deadspace also had an eerie feeling to it and yeah Alma from Fear scared many a big men that i can promise you

Haha yeah, the original definitely had the best atmosphere. The twinkle twinkle little star tune playing softly in the distance was particularly eerie. As for DS 2 & 3 I love the entire series but they lost their scare factor when they became more action orientated rather than survival horror.

i have a problem i don't get scared for some reason but there was this one time on the night of the Doom 3 launch i got home at about one in the morning installed the game and started playing

There is once place kinda in the beginning where you walk into a room and get a pda and 3 imps warp in kill them and then you walk out
As i walked out i heard the most sinister laugh ever and as that happpened my wife whispers in my ear "come sleep now"

I almost decked her and just pushed the power button on my pc and went to sleep.
