Have you considered buying the rapture dlc?

I have but decided against it. I shouldn't have to purchase additional content to actually enjoy the original game.

Again the game is fantastic in all respects on paper...however the finished product gives the impression that the game was made with almost obsessive attention to the detail as to the checkboxes needed for an amazing game; but in so doing forgot to make the experience fun.

The dlc does not add more enjoyment... it adds an extra layer of being back in Rapture

I loved Rapture as a setting but I'm not sure if it's enough to make like he actual gameplay. How do you rate it in comparison to vanilla ?

I think the dlc is very good and the new graphics make it better.

i would say that is is actually better than Bioshock's 1 and 2 rapture... BUT it does no have the RAPTURE song
