The Division Being Co-Developed by Ubisoft Reflections
Ubisoft's UK studio, Reflections, is now co-developing The Division alongside Ubisoft Massive.
The new Tom Clancy game was previously only known as a Massive project, but Reflections managing director Pauline Jacquey says that roughly 40% of her studio has been put on The Division, and that it has been working on it for a few months.
Jacquey told Develop Online that Reflections is at work on all of the game's systems, from main characters and enemies to online components to building Manhattan itself. "It gives us a very broad and wide input on the game, but it's not as limited as the naval battles on Assassin's Creed III," she said.
An anonymous source previously said that the 2014 release target was overambitious. The core systems were working, the source claimed, but the game hadn't been built around it yet. Given rumors that it might slip to 2015 already, the newly-revealed shared development duties raise questions of whether The Division is lagging behind. Jacquey denies any such problem with development.
"That's absolutely not the case," she said. "This is part of a global model that Ubisoft has been deploying in the past seven or eight years. It's also classic team size management. You don't want your team to be too big when you're in the initial phase of conception, when you need a lot of agility. But when you're in full production--and given that the game's scope is gigantic--it needs a big team behind it."
She added that Massive and Reflections requested to work together, and were not simply paired by Ubisoft.
