Default Microsoft will charge you to use your own headset with Xbox One

You'll have to pay $24.99 to use your own chat headset on Xbox One

Seems like quite a lot of money for a tiny bit of plastic.

Microsoft will charge you $24.99/£19.99 (approx. R360.00) for the option to use your own chat headset with the Xbox One, thanks to the console's proprietary headset port and the new stereo headset adapter.

The adapter has its own volume controls and will allow users to adjust the levels of both chat and game audio, but the adapter does not allow for output of game audio to any headsets themselves--your favourite Astro/Turtle Beach/Tritton/etc headset will still need to be plugged into the Xbox One, TV, or receiver to get game audio. Both 3.5mm and 2.5mm jacks are supported.

    The Xbox One Stereo Headset.
The headset adapter will be available to purchase worldwide in March, hopefully in time for Titanfall.

"Plug your compatible headset into the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter to chat with your fellow players, and enjoy the convenient volume controls right on the adapter," said Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb on his blog.

Additionally, Microsoft will also release its own stereo headset in March that comes with an adapter included. This will retail for $79.99/£59.99.

"The Stereo Headset pairs a premium, full-range (20Hz-20kHz) audio experience with a unidirectional microphone taking advantage of Xbox One’s Skype-powered chat audio codec," said Hryb.
    Keep digging that grave Microsoft.

We'll just have to wait and see what they come up with.

    Me too.

Its like everytime I think that I want a Xbox One, Microsoft give me more reasons not to bother with it.

Yeah, I must say I agree with you. It looks semi decent to be honest. But, what about the poor dudes that bought Sennies for their xbox

Then again, if you can afford sennheisers, you can afford the R300. But principles always win out.

I was gonna wait for the xbox for my purchase of the new gen consoles, but the premium over the PS4 now is just getting out of hand.

I honestly think guys that drop R8000 on a console and spend upwards of R700 on a game won't mind buying the adapter.
The adapter should have been free though...but this is the world we live in now...you pay for everything.

Edit: I am kinda keen to see the headset and the specs...Wondering if it can compete with other gaming headsets...Mmmmm

Well, there is still much time before it actually launches here. Here's to me hoping they can restore my ever decreasing faith.

Main reason now I want this is for Titanfall so I can play with my clan, and maybe the Gears of War game coming. But otherwise, I can't see myself wanting this. Anymore. Did I just say that!?

So what is wrong with regular 3.5mm jacks? My iPod headphones seem to have a mic, volume and play controls on it without needing some new fangled connector and the iPod is fully compatible with any 3.5mm jack. Seems like Microsoft is taking us as fools here.

They can because they can. Nutshell.

Always makes me chuckle how some companies will keep giving their fans the finger because they have enough fanbois to do so.
