Are any of you overly-defensive queers i.e. those who feel insulted when people misuse the word gay in statements like "Fake and gay"?
I wouldn't say it offends me, but it causes a momentary sickness to my stomach when I hear someone use the word in that context. It's probably because I had an extremely Christian upbringing where I was constantly taught that being gay is wrong, and I knew people who used the term in a derogatory manner with the intent of insinuating homosexuality. So I can't help but automatically and momentarily associate the word with a direct mockery of homosexuality when it's being used as an insult.
I also think it's pretty unnecessary considering the wide range of similar insults that could be used instead, without the potential to cause confusion and hurt as a result of it.

It doesn't offend me, but I make a point of asking people who use it what it is, exactly, which makes the situation "gay" - and based on their response, I correct them or direct them to a better word to use.
Unless two dudes are making out right in front of you, I don't think shouting "Wow, that's so gay" at something is necessary.
I'm entirely guilty of throwing it around myself, though.
My taking as well. I've had a few gay friends throughout my life, the majority fade from friendships due to their obsessing that they're never really accepted by those who've known them since before they came out - never the matter of what has been said or what assurances have been made.
I have a very sound acceptance of everyone around me, I cast myself from society due to what I experienced in the Army and during break and my last shift I told many lies to friends, new and old, in attempt to maintain a level of humanity which left my grasp eons ago. It caught up to me though when I had a good breakdown. It's not exactly the same thing, but in a sense it's similar to you guys coming out.
Respect to you all.
Yes! I just started watching Looking this past weekend. I'm finding it's a more believable version of Queer as Folk so far, with some welcome odd humour. Pretty much Girls but with gay guys. I'll keep watching![]()
