Remind me again, what is the purpose/benefit of being in a platoon? I joined the MyGaming BF3 platoon but I don't remember it meaning much.

Ah ok, so it's basically stats kind of stuff, nothing much that affects gameplay.
I see this one works differently.. the platoons now only get points when 4 or more people in the platoon play on the same server

Ag geesh that's almost never gonna happen! Aren't they also inadvertently promoting team-stacking with this tactic?
