    Default TV Licence? WTF?

Bought a TV a year ago. The only way I could buy it (from Game) was if I took a TV licence too. So now I'm getting calls for renewal.
The thing is I don't receive a signal from SABC. It all come from DSTV who I pay every month obviously.

    so screw tv licence right?

Sadly, no. I read that you have to pay your TV license if you own a device capable of receiving a terrestrial signal. I don't have DSTV anymore and never watch SABC, but I'm still obliged to pay my TV license. Which I haven't done in a year.

Ja...sadly you need to pay it because of the tuner card in your TV. It doesn't matter that you don't receive a signal, what matters is that you can receive a signal.
    That's what she said.

Once you paid your first TV license, you're screwed. Its a nightmare canceling it when you dump anything capable of receiving it.

You even need one if you get the tuner for your computer even if you don't have a tv. So not really a "tv" license but more for the honor of renting the broadcasting signal. They do say that paying the tv license helps bring premium tv viewing such as the madiba funeral so they sms'd me so politely after not paying on time.

Yet another money-grubbing scam from one of our failed institutions.

That it is. What does a TV license run nowadays? R250 a year or so?

It's downright scummy forcing people to pay that, but I'd rather pay it than end up being handed over.

While you might be moaning about R250 a year for a TV licence fee, here it costs me 2,076 SEK per year (R3,500-odd).

Despite the fact that our TV isn't even plugged into an antenna and we don't watch the local TV at all, we have to pay it simply because we have internet devices that can be used to watch the streams online.

Yep, it really is that batshit.

So R250 for a TV licence a year isn't that bad. Bearing in mind that I'm of the devout opinion that TV licences are a draconian model and should be utterly scrapped.

The ironic thing is, in our family I am the only one without a tv license, since they have decided we owe over R20k on a license that has been paid in full each year (we have proof of payment), but even though we have sent proof of payment, we cannot buy a new tv with my dad's license until we pay up. . . .
