I think it's safe to say that the Final Fantasy superbosses have always been super challenging (as is their nature) - and possibly getting increasingly more challenging with every new game.

The thing is, each superboss is self-contained, and success hinges off how accustomed you are to that specific Final Fantasy's battle systems (ATB vs turn-based vs gambit/AI control, etc).

For instance, FF9's Ozma would be a joke in FFX (where you can easily do 99,999 damage with one hit, which is why X's Omega Weapon was a joke with 999,999 HP, and Penance took over) - but in the self-contained game, he (it) was still a challenge as characters couldn't become so super-powered.

In my opinion, Final Fantasy XII's gambit system - and the time and difficulty of getting all the items, grinding to the necessary levels, and going through all the long-ass hunts - was just too much for me. A far stretch from previous the Final Fantasies' superboss access requirements.

FFXIII continued the trend, it seems.

Yiazmat has ridiculous HP compared to some other FF superbosses though. Of course, you *can* leave the battle, save, and come back and continue...

FF7 - Emerald/Ruby weapons - 1,000,000/800,000
FF8 - Omega Weapon - 1,161,000 (lvl 100)
FF9 - Ozma - 55,535 (Maximum - shared with Hades)
FF10 - Penance - 12,000,000 HP (also Nemesis, 10 million HP)
FF10-2 - Trema - 999,999 HP (there are other, tougher superbosses though, especially in the HD/International version)
FF12 - Yiazmat - 50,112,254 HP
FF13 - Vercingetorix - 15,840,000 HP
FF13-2 - Raspatil - 3,666,000 HP (Plus Vercingetorix again)
LR:FF13 - Aeronite - 38,000,000 HP (Hard mode)
Granted, HP isn't always the best measure of challenge, but it's a good indication of how long you'll be spending chipping away at them.

Out of interest, who has actually gone after all the superbosses? I've only done Emerald and Ruby in 7, Omega in 8, Ozma in 9, Omega in 10 (not even going to consider Penance) and...yeah, that's it. I'm currently trying to get to Trema in 10-2 HD, but the patience and dedication...it's wearing thin.

I used to be so proud of defeating Omega in FF8, but now I see he's basically a wimp in comparison :P
