I think originally it was, but over the years it became somewhat of a legend and people were no longer sure whether it was actually true, not to mention there were supposedly millions of E.T. copies buried, and they only found a thousand or so total Atari products. The very fact that they decided to dispose of it in such a strange way also added to the longevity of the legend I guess. I too find it very interesting and think it was great of Microsoft to fund this.
