I also have definite ideas about a wedding - I dont intend to spend R100 000 - R500 000 on a wedding day either.
And yet you get women that expect/demand this even when they know their boyfriends/fiances can't afford it.

I never get it when people pay that much for rings, but to each his own I guess. I was lucky, my wife's engagement ring did not cost me an arm and a leg, and when we wed, we just added two bands on either side to the existing ring. Triple my monthly salary? Se moer man.

I'm probably going to have a hard time when I have to get married because I straight up refuse to pay ludicrous amounts of money on a rock, or the actual wedding itself (heaven have mercy on the soul that decides to take me as a significant other)... Symbolic things don't need to cost an arm and a leg IMO.

One day, I'll grow up and become responsible.

I take it you think my tune might change from a baritone to a soprano

If the woman gets all pissed off about a ring then she isn't worth it and is the wrong woman. I will never get involved with someone that demands stuff I cannot afford. bah bah bah humbug

    Depends on culture too.

e.g. Ze Germans tend to go with a simple gold band for engage and then a proper ring for wedding. The first is more a declaration of intent so to speak...

No matter how you spin it its going to be expensive though

Depends on the girl...if she insists on diamonds then you're screwed. Do not pass go. Do not collect 20k. And pay 20k to the de beers cartel.

If she is willing to consider other stones then you should easily be OK.

    or the actual wedding itself

Same...closest relatives aside they can all get lost for all I care. Might change my tune though...aka...might not have a choice

I think for my engagement I'll take off my ring and use that, I practically wear it every day and it's special to me. Then I'll get a nice ring for the wedding and a band inscribed with the day I proposed etc since I'm sure mine will be to big for her to wear.
    My ignore list: n/a
