I'm surprised at all the XBox and PS3 downloads. I didn't even know you can download pirated console games. Everyone is usually just hammering on the PC for pirating and enforcing DRM on there.
These days I use pirated games to save on cap, just copy the game file over to right directly for Steam and verify file integrity. That's about how much hassle I can put up with. It's also a mental thing, how does one play a pirated game when one you bought is sitting there right on the shelf.
I also just played through Dark Souls 2, can't imagine it without the online.
There's also the issue of day one pricing which is normally too expensive for most, and people who can't wait and must play the game at the peak of the hype.
One thing people fail to mention about the torrents is that after a while they simply die out.

When an anti-piracy method is affecting the game for people who legitimately bought it and causing other people not to buy the game, there is obviously something wrong with it!
One thing that spreads like wildfire are movies and series, and the way they are spread are via portable hardrives which almost always contains a new game or two. So I just copy the ones over I might be interested in playing in the future. I only tend to play games these days 6 months after released and when on sale like Tomb Raider.
That way I know I'm playing a fully patched game that had some time to "mature".
Or I buy the game from Steam, find out it has a huge size, then I'm stuck with hunting down the pirated copy since no one I know has Steam or have completely different taste than me.
Currently I have that problem with Batman Origins and Castlevania
