Default CVG, Edge Online to close down

Gaming publications axed: CVG, Edge Online, and more

A number of long-running gaming websites are to be shuttered as Future Publishing tries to staunch its financial haemorrhaging

No big loss. Just a pity they're not taking Kotaku down with them while they're at it.

Hundreds of employees are losing jobs, so it's probably a big loss for them.

What's wrong with Kotaku though? I usually find them entertaining.

    I like Kotaku!

As I've grown older and more hostile towards gaming publications in general (IGN, Gamespot, etc) I find myself more often only reading publications that are able to keep my interest. Of those, my list is:

    MyGaming
    Kotaku
The Escapist (long live Jim Sterling & Zero Punctuation!)

And a notable mention for Total Biscuit, who isn't quite a publication

I don't understand your hostility towards Kotaku?

Rep all you want, it's what it's there for

Gotta love that I get neg-repped for that post by someone who doesn't even bother posting in the thread. Sorry that your buddy lost his job when Pc Format closed down, Solitude, but we're not talking about PC Format here.

None of these sites closing down were actually any good and CVG in particular were practically shilling on a number of occasions. It's a shame that people are losing their jobs, but most of these guys will get gobbled up elsewhere anyway.

I don't need to post to rep. I give out a lot of rep and almost never negative rep. Truth is that some legendary gaming publications are closing and people ARE losing their jobs and it's difficult for these people to find jobs again. Unfortunately they don't get gobbled up elsewhere easily. My wife was a journalist and now a sub-editor. Believe me, I know the impact of sites and magazines closing down.

    It IS a big loss.

Hence the reason for my neg rep. If it was truly worthy of being neg rep, that I can not say. It happened though.

I find they've become the yellow press of gaming news sites. I'm more likely to find clickbait and spammy articles there on a day-to-day basis than articles that are actually worth reading. I used to love them, but the noise-to-signal ratio has become almost unbearable in the past few years.

No worries fellow. Feel free to neg-rep all you want. It's there for you to use, as Lycanthrope said. I just thought it very curious that someone would neg-rep me, stating a completely unrelated incident as the reason and then not even engage me in discussion on my post.

Yeah, I won't deny that they're a bit on the tabloid side of gaming journalism but, as I say, I still enjoy their articles and a lot of the things they link to. It's just a fun and not-very-serious publication to read

    This is sad news.

One of my very first gaming mags was CVG, back around 1995. The thing that drew me to it was that they didn't approach gaming as a juvenile thing, but rather as a hobby and industry that should be taken seriously. I regularly bought the mag, until Ed Lomas and the then editor left some time after starting the first Golden Joystick Awards. The tone of the mag shifted a little, and I was just getting into getting my news online. The website never quite captured the feel that the mag had, IMO, but it's still a massive loss to the industry.
