Default Freeware / Opensource Titles and the memories

A while back I had a flashback... I was looking at a new space simulator called Elite Dangerous.
It got me all excited, I started thinking about all the games I used to play back in the day when there were quite a selection of space games.

One game stood out, partly for how tough it was to get working.
Partly because I was playing it without any real understanding of what was going on.
Mostly because it was not easy to get going, but when I really got into it, I was playing it and ignoring most of my other games.

That game was Vega Strike. It had mods, it had interesting graphics and procedural systems as far as I can remember. Not to mention the alien races, warfare and ships that you can play in.

Game has not been updated in a while, but I know that a couple of people are still working on it.

So here's my questions to you:
    1. Have you ever played this?
    2. Know of any other freeware / opensource games worth mentioning?
    3. Know of anything in the same genre as Vega Strike?
Please keep all extremities tucked in...

I'll look up Vega Strike, looks great, but read in NAG I think, that Elite Dangerous will cost you R1000+ for the game.

    Edit: Standard version : R900
    Premium : R1700.

I've been itching to get into something like, been oogling that other scruffy game, Roberts Space Industries...

But something free to get my feet wet would be great.

Vega Strike also has multiplayer, so it could be worth it. And it has a wing commander mod that's reasonable.

Yeah Elite is seriously expensive, but the price will lower as they exit beta. Although they did just get into beta so that is still a while away.

Okay that looks really good! Looking through the website... I have some questions though:

    1. How much time have you spent on this game?
    2. Any good memories you feel like sharing regarding it?

    1. I played it about an hour or two a day for two weeks, so maybe 20 hours or so at least.
    2. Just flying a ship is exciting in itself, from taking off from a carrier, to just fiddling around with all the controls, and eventually docking with a carrier after doing a mission... then you get to engaging in dogfights, which is the best bit. It's immensely satisfying to play, but it can get very tricky in some missions. Probably best you get a joystick, if you don't already have one, for the best experience.

I'd also like to put these games out there if you haven't heard of them for some reason: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Lost Alpha, The Dark Mod (for fans of the Thief series), and UFO: Alien Invasion. The last one is very much like XCOM. Really good stuff once you get into it.
