Do you still pre-order games? Activision says “not so much”
Despite Activision’s expectation for Destiny to be the most pre-ordered new IP in gaming history, the publisher says that pre-orders don’t mean as much as they used to

Judging by all the disappointment I've seen from forum members about games that they pre-ordered, I'm not convinced that it is a wise decision to pre-order a game.
If you can just go buy the game on release day with lots of stock on the shelf, why would you bother pre-ordering? The rewards are silly and often obtainable later.

Exactly.
Additionally, when you by games on release day, or even in the same week, the pre-order bonuses are usually still included with the purchase. This means that if you absolutely have to have the pre-order bonuses, then you have at least a day to discern whether or not the game is worth buying. If you really want the super-deluxe-mondo-extra-limited edition (with Ken doll), then the largest portion of your purchase is going to those bonus items anyway, so if the game is terrible/buggy/always-online, then at least you have the goods to console you.
There are very few reasons to pre-order.
Exactly. I didn't pre-order Skyrim...but I bought it the next day from a store with the pre-order bonus canvas map. I don't see the point of placing an order weeks in advance if I can just walk into a store and get it.
I reckon for something that you really want and is in seriously limited supply (like that complete Metal Gear Solid HD Collection that came out in Europe and was gone pretty quickly), then you should probably order it...but for normal stuff, don't waste your time.
