so where to start then with power metal ? [apart from the very basics which i will follow now]

You should start with easy alternative songs so you can get clicked with your band. And then go on the harder stuff. We are going to after we have gotten use to playing with each other. Metallica, Black sabbath,ac/dc

I can play Thunderstruck, most awesome song to hammer out.

THunder struck is very easy.
