Default Maxis producer: If Sims 4 isn't successful, there's no Sims 5

EA isn't thinking about the next Sims game at all, but the future of the series hinges on The Sims 4 performing well, Maxis producer Grant Rodiek said on the official Sims forum (cache here).

"We're not working on Sims 5," Rodiek said. "We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5." This isn't an absolute credo, however – when another fan asked for clarification on that statement, Rodiek said, "It's not all or nothing, per se, but something has to pay for 5."

The Sims 4 topped the UK charts last week. We've been playing it as an MTV's Real World simulator, with members of the Joystiq staff living together, cooking for each other, working and building rocket ships.

There is no way that Sims 4 is going to be a commercial failure. There are way too many people willing to spend hundreds of rands on every expansion, which I am sure there will be a lot of. Look at sales charts right now. Even after so many years after it's release, one version of The Sims will always feature on the "best selling game of the month". I foresee the same will happen with Sims 4. Maybe not now, in it's current state, but surely the sales will come.

Was a big Sims fan until the 3rd game and have been very critical of the new one with them having cut a lot of content previously available in previous base games. From what I see online though opinions seem to be getting a lot more positive since release with a lot saying it is the best base game since the first 2. I'm still annoyed that the cut content will most likely show up soon as expensive dlc or expansion packs so I'm not quite ready to buy into the developing enthusiasm just yet.

I cant believe the Sims is still going... You look at GREAT games, like Age of Empires, which we haven't seen of heard of a new one in ages, but this crap keeps coming...

I suppose when you have every 11-16 year old girl wanting to play house you get the sales numbers up...

I think that's the thing, The Sims has such a huge fan base / target market. Its a game parents allow kids to play, and older people who played the 1st one hoping that each installment will be as epic.

EA probably shouldn't have cut as many features as they did if they want it to be more successful. I suppose its just more to add to paid DLC / Expansions.

I think we can expect "Pool Stuff" & "Toddler stuff" expansions in the future.

It's all a game to these okes...they don't care what they say, as long as they say something to make people talk about Sims 4. Any publicity is good publicity.

I have a feeling that EA's definition of commercial success is somewhat different than our own I think they are counting on the DLC/expansion pack sales for it. Sure, the base game will sell as the current Sims player base will all get it. But if they don't like the base game the DLC won't sell half as well as EA hopes. My wife has every Sims 3 game, but already says that unless they drastically improve Sims 4 there's no way she's buying any more. Judging from the fan reactions, most people feel the same way.
