Well, I'm guilty of few things mentioned here.

Sometimes, I feel that I am at other side of barricades.

I have one friend that plays CS series professionally and sometimes DOTA 2, for which I have some disrespect as "no progress" games (topic for the other thread) and effort required for basic playing (remember, grinding to play games in not fun). He repeatedly tried to get me into both games or other games I've outgrown.

On my side, I tried to get him into TF2 or other games, but topic died out on level of first-time playing or idea.

I am also guilty of creeping out people out in past in chat/forums with repetitive and needless messages in form of "hi/how are you/what are you up to", until couple guys explained to me that messaging systems are only for one having business (not in terms of actual business) and not waste everyone's times (and distracting them from whatever they are doing). Although, I met nice people with who I could chat entire night or play together.

TL;DR: 1) It's bidirectional thing when someone's gaming interests not correspond. 2) Finding people to chat online is ridiculously hard.

I have casual gamer friends, gamer friends by association and gaming siblings.

I do not have many friends (anymore), thus I do not find myself in that situation.

I used to be alone, but I recently appointed 2 OTT gamers who just want to talking gaming. So it's nice to be able to talk gamih when I want to. We also play some MP games when we can coordinate schedules.

Other than that, co-director of company and me jam some Guild Wars 2 together. We even have our own guild, with mostly work-guys admittedly.

Also had the problem of no one wanting to play with me -.-

I now have quite a few guys/girls playing with via steam etc. Team speak also has it benefits.

Only problem I have now is they get new games and I can't afford it so some leave, but there are always some who stay

Creeping each other out is half the fun. *Sits uncomfortably close to everyone and mouth breathes*

I've managed to convert a couple of my friends. What it really seems to take is to find the right game to get them hooked. You can't get a non gamer interested by throwing them in the deep end of eg MP FPS for example because they will just die a lot and think it sucks, but maybe if they are a sports fan, let them have a go at eg FIFA or a racing game. Maybe an adventure or strategy game otherwise. If you can find the right thing to get them hooked, then you can get them over to the gamer side.

    Um, right...

On a side note, have you ever tried beat-boxing into the mic while playing an FPS and see how many people join in?

If you want to meet some gamer friends, I have my own TS3 server with my buddies and we play a whole bunch of games together. The server was also created just to talk crap with each other.

Let me know if any of you are keen to jam some coop games together or talk crap and I'll provide the details via PM.

I don't know if you'll remember, when we first started the BFBC2 mybb clan, that first night on teamspeak there was some oke that had porn playing in the background.
