Alien: Isolation
I got this for Xbox One and must say that it's the first time in a very long time I've actually been genuinely scared playing a game.
The atmosphere of the game perfectly replicates the feel of the movie. In terms of gameplay, it's refreshing to play a game where I am not the unstoppable killing machine and instead I am being hunted by that exact thing.
The first time encountering the massive Xenomorph, my hairs stood on end. I died. Next, I successfully managed to hide before it saw me. Then I tried moving away thinking I was outside its line of sight. I died. First lesson learnt, this isn't your usual enemy AI with cone vision in its own world. It almost feels like it can sense you. I thought I was afraid.
Next, I managed to hide in a vent, and moved to get my phone. I died. The alien picked up that I had moved (via Kinect). Next, while hiding, I started whispering while waiting for it to pass. I died. The alien picked up on my speech (via Kinect). This was when I truly felt afraid. Now, every moment it's close, I physically tense up. It's a completely exhilarating experience as it's the closest I've felt to being hunted. It can hear you, see you and there's nothing I can do to stop it once it knows where you are. You're in its world and it will rip you apart faster than you realise that it's there. Every time it sees me, I try my best to escape. I try running away only to see its blade tail rip through me. I try hiding but it finds me and tears my face apart. I try distracting it and it knows better. It's terrifying. Every single encounter is a visceral experience, each successful escape feels like an achievement.
I'm 6 hours in at the moment and cannot wait to return to that world. 10/10, would die again.
