Listened to it earlier, a couple of things bug me about this current for of implementation. GRANTED it is just a prototype.
But first of all, the chatter is supposed to be background, and it's way too loud in the video. Maybe that's to make you focus on it, but still, makes little sense to me. Secondly some of the chatter makes little sense. At a station, the person who is controlling space traffic would try to keep chatter as short as possible as follows:
1. Get pilot's attention: "Commander Dimwit..."
2. "Docking cleared..."
3. "Proceed to Pad xx..."
4. "Maintain speed below 100" <- Considering how the numerical system works in Elite, everyone would understand this better. It also makes the message a lot shorter than saying: Reduce speed and maintain a speed of 100 meters per second" It's a waste of precious time when you have multiple ships approaching your station.
But I digress, these are just my thoughts.

So, I finally got Elite Dangerousa few weeks back on sale, and managed to install it and gave it a bash. Cannot say I am loving it just yet.
I used to play a lot of Wing Commander Privateer, Freelancer and even some X3. And somehow I find ED very hard to get into. I managed to set up my controls so strafing, landing and generally maneuvering my ship comes easily enough, but struggling to enjoy the game. I gave up for a few days and will try again this weekend. I really want to love this game!
Perhaps some friends can help you out in-game. The game is not very easy to get into or to get used to, it's not meant to be. It will never really hold your hand or guide you through what to do next other than the basic mission description.
I've also found that it plays very different to other space games.
You are welcome to join us if you want to try it out a bit more.
Did you get Elite Dangerous, or Elite Dangerous Horizons?

Yep, any HOTAS is better than nothing. The one you got is an excellent entry level setup. It makes those adjustments with flight assist off so much better.
Still running with this
